Every house has a different scenario of a building structure due to different builder’s maps. Likewise, the kitchen hood ducting is also different, and obstruction of the kitchen vent ducting creates hurdles for the installation of rigid duct.
There are some special cases and reasons for flexible ducting for range hood usage.
Replacement of Old range hood
Firstly, the replacement of the old range hood model with a new one is hard process. For instance, replacement of range hood is slightly tricky due to different new and old hood sizes.
There is a strong chance of different size of new range as compare to old hood and this will require re-modelling of kitchen. Similarly, air duct size also differs from the previous one.
However, its rule of thumb to maintain a standard ratio between CFM rating and duct size. A smaller duct of range hood can bear an average of 250~350 CFM rarting. It would be harmful to range hood for undersize duct usage instead of the exact standard rating.
In this mismatch case, you may need to use flexible duct for making a perfect contact with old duct to the new range hood without doing remodelling.
New Installation with Obstructions in kitchen
Obstructions is another big issue of new installation of range hood. For the most part, the kitchen has very few piping and duct running through the walls. There are a few scenarios of very compact kitchen vent duct, especially in flats.
Flats with compact size kitchen ventilation duct are the only places of critical or tricky installations. Consumer main concern is to get 100% output and efficiency.
Therefore, in this tricky installation, flexible ducting is the only perfect solution.
Flexible duct fault & issues
Flexible ducting become not suitbale due to following reasons.
Firstly, durability is very low, and it could not run for a long time in the kitchen. Flexible pipes are normally made of galvanized material, aluminium alloys and stainless steel as well. However, stainless steel is the right material for flexible choice but it also has few issues.
Grooves in flexible hood vent pipe holds grease particles with it, and after a few years, it can create a blockage. Furthermore, flexible pipes get a lot of rust and become useless.
Can flexible duct be used for range hood?
In normal practice and experts opinion, flexible ducting is not a good solution for range hoods for long life and not recommended. In brief, flexible can be used in some critical cases of range hood replacement, connecting with available old duct, and compact kitchens of flats. But for entirely new setup, it’s not recommended to go with flexible duct.
Is flex duct any good?
Flexible ducting for microwave vent or stove duct solution is partialy good according to condition requirements. Less durability and short life are the only causes of flexible duct failure.
Whereas, Flex duct for range hood is slightly good and in cases of compact kitchen vent duct. And in this case flex kitchen exhaust is most recommended solution. Normally 5 inches flexible duct for range hood is commonly used in kitchen duct.
What type of duct is best for venting a range hood?
Rigid ducting is the best solution for kitchen duct due to its reliability and long life. These types of ducting has almost negligible performance issues and most importantly long life, easy cleaning and extraordinary performance are highligted features.
Experts recommends rigid type ducting. In some cases flexible ducting is not possible due to numerous issues and require flexible duct to through outside contaminated air but its not too good and reliable.
The flexible hood vent tube is a kind of solution to enjoy range hood experience and performance in cases of impossible and unavailability of rigid ducting option. It is not appropriate to use flexible ducting instead of rigid duct because the rigid duct is the more appropriate and nominal solution for metal vent kitchen hood.
